Our History

The Royal Restaurant - Old Town Alexandria

For over 100 years, the Royal has been the most popular restaurant in Old Town, Alexandria.  The family-owned Royal Café, was originally located next to city hall at 109 North Royal Street.  The Royal Café became Alexandria’s premier lunch time eatery for the then bustling downtown shopping district during the 1940’s, 50’s & 60’s.  Everyone ate at the Royal Cafe!

Although a family restaurant, the Royal Café was regularly visited by secretaries, police officers & other downtown workers.  For many years it was the place where many of the city’s most important political decisions were made. Many politicians, attorneys, businessmen & downtown citizens discussed the hot topics of the day over hearty southern style dinners & rice pudding desserts.

The building on North Royal Street was torn down in 1964 to make room for the city’s urban renewal projects on the block. Undaunted by the uncompensated taking of their prime location, the owners, Richard Kyriacos & his nephew, Charles Euripides moved the Royal to it’s present location in 1965.  With very hard work & determination they made the new Royal Restaurant a success!  Now Charles Euripides, proudly continue the tradition of it’s fine home-style cooking, authentic Greek & Italian fare & hospitable service. Welcome to the Royal Restaurant!
